So back in 2002 and 2003 I spent about 6 months of my life writing my senior thesis at UC Berkeley about cultural politics and revolutions in Zanzibar. By early 2005, I had pretty much come to accept that only about six people in the world would ever read a page of it, though I suppose it did earn me a B.A. in the Political Economy of Development and Environment from the wonderful Interdisciplinary Studies major program…
But then everything changed when I got a little email, submitted it on a whim to this magazine, and now here it is, full color photos and all! Albeit a truncated edition, but at least it’s got most of the readable parts:) And it’s also just in time to get people thinking about Zanzibar before a potentially very corrupt election in a few months.
You also might be interested in the original, much longer version, which is what I actually handed in.
